Alsatian Bredele, the gourmet highlight of the festive season.

Bredele (also known as Bredala or Bredle) are traditional Alsatian Christmas cakes. They can be found on the stalls of Christmas markets in Alsace and are eaten during the Advent period. Bredele literally means «little cakes» in Alsatian, and today the term is used to describe dozens of different kinds of «little cakes» in a variety of shapes and flavours.

Their recipes have been handed down from generation to generation, and making them in the run-up to Christmas is a real ritual for Alsatian families! The ingredients used to make Bredele are the very foundations of traditional biscuit-making: flour, butter, eggs, etc. Then there are the exotic spices such as cinnamon, vanilla and ginger, as well as dried fruits like almonds, walnuts and pistachios.

Alsatian Christmas cakes can be shaped in several ways: for the most part, they are cut out using cookie cutters, like our Marbré Damier or Schwowebredele. But they can also be shaped with a pastry bag, like the Spritzbredele.
